Read about Dave's contributions to the club and learn some fun facts about the man who has been dubbed "Map Head" by his family.
Please list the Reston Runners programs and/or events that you volunteer for.
My volunteer activities include working on the Finish Line Services team, being a Stats & Chat writer, and serving as a Gunga Din water toter. I'm also a Member-at-Large on the Reston Runners Board of Directors, chairman of the club's New Web Site Development Committee, and a Run/Walk Course Committee member.
What do you like best about doing volunteer work for the club?
I enjoy working with and supporting a great bunch of fun-loving people. It's my way of contributing to the Reston Runners' mission to "Encourage Fitness For Life."
Please tell us an unusual fact about yourself or talent that you have that few people know about.
I enjoy reading biographies. My current interest is reading about all the "founding fathers" and the Revolutionary War period. Regarding a talent, the only innate capability I have is that I always seem to know which way is north. My family calls me "map head." My sense of direction sometimes breaks down when I am in a strange building, but outside I'm as accurate as a Cracker Jack toy compass.
When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a high school math teacher. I got all the right degrees and certificates, but Vietnam and the Air Force came along and changed all that. I don't really miss being a teacher; so many great things have happened for me that I have no regrets. I have been very lucky.
We Need You!
Want to pitch in and help out the club, too? Reston Runners offers a variety of programs and activities you can volunteer for:
Course Marking
Gungadins (Water support)
Finish Line Services
Youth in Motion program
Women's Training Program
Women's Distance Festival
Stats and Chats reporter
In addition, we can always use your help for the Fall Into Winter race, the annual summer picnic and pool party, the annual dinner meeting, W&OD trail cleanup days, crewing and other tasks for the JFK50 race, and the periodic blood drives the club sponsors.
